This study investigates the role of indigenous microbial communities in the bioremediation of heavy metal pollutants in wetland ecosystems, focusing on a specific case in the Brazilian Pantanal. Using a combination of field sampling, laboratory assays, and molecular techniques, we characterized microbial diversity and metabolic capabilities related to heavy metal detoxification. Our findings reveal significant bioremediation potential within the indigenous communities, with specific taxa exhibiting enhanced resistance and degradation of toxic metals. The results underscore the importance of preserving microbial biodiversity in wetland management strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of industrial pollution. This research contributes valuable insights into sustainable approaches for ecosystem restoration and highlights the necessity of integrating microbial ecology into environmental policy frameworks.
