Abstract

This study investigates the efficacy of syndromic surveillance systems relative to traditional epidemiological methods in urban public health contexts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, key performance metrics such as timeliness, sensitivity, and specificity were evaluated across a two-year period in three metropolitan areas. Our findings reveal significant discrepancies in detection rates, with syndromic systems outperforming traditional methods in rapid outbreak identification, though not without limitations in specificity. These insights underscore the need for a hybrid model for optimal disease monitoring and response strategies in densely populated regions.
